"This book, and the One Yard Wonders II book, are all you will ever need in your sewing library. It's true!! I own both books, and I pretty much only sew from them and the Oliver and S "Little Things to Sew" book. I have made so many gifts from these two books I feel like a cheater! I am a BEGINNING sewer, like, have not sewn since I was 12 (and I was pretty bad then!!!). These two books have helped me pick up where I left off. Sometimes I don't fully understand the directions, so I Google "One Yard Wonders Sew-a-Long" and there are a few "Sew-a-Long" blogs that do every single project in the book. On these blogs you can get a few more tips if you are misunderstanding the directions, like I have. You won't be sorry if you get this book."

OneYard Wonders 101 Sewing Projects Look How Much You Can Make with Just One Yard of Fabric! Patricia Hoskins Rebecca Yaker Books Reviews

  • I really want to like this book, but I'm still on the fence. I'm not new to sewing (I've been sewing for 20+ years and have a degree in fashion design), but I pre-ordered the book hoping to find some *new* ideas for quick, fun, projects.

I don't need instructions to cover a cork board or line a bookcase with fabric. Most of the other projects are the same old thing aprons, laptop and CD sleeves, laundry bags, a yoga mat bag, a basic bias skirt, placemats, handbags, a sewing machine cover, pet beds and toys, lunch and trash bags. Over 30 (out of 101) of the projects are for children's items (clothing, toys, etc.). There are some fresh ideas though, I love the origami box and a couple of the women's summer tops are cute.

Overall, if you are new to sewing, you'll probably love this book and it would be a great place to start. It has a great section on basic sewing techniques and the book itself is beautifuly photographed and laid out. I like the spiral bindng and I appreciate that it came with pattern pieces for all but the most basic projects.

If you are not new to sewing, don't expect to find many new ideas here. However, it is a great collection of classic projects all in one place and nicely photographed.
  • I purchased this book two years ago. Since then, I've made several projects from the book; however, it doesn't really contain any patterns or projects that one couldn't find on the internet for free.

The major flaw of the book is the directions. Some are confusing. It takes more than a yard of fabric for some clothes items if the one is a larger size (sleep top). Not everyone is as small as the young ladies pictured in the book.

Some directions are unclear. I just made a pair of sleep shorts. I had to make my own pattern. I've never made these before, so I didn't know what a "total rise measurement" was; it wasn't in the book anywhere. I had to google it, found various definitions, and did my best. This, however, turned out to be the wrong thing to do. Once my sleep pants were completed, they wouldn't fit. I had done the rise incorrectly; however, I did follow the directions as given on page 141 (total rise measurement divided by 2) I tried to salvage the pants, thus making them rather odd looking.

Other thing, there is a section for children's clothes; but they are for little girls. I am the mother of two boys.

Overall, it's not a terrible book, but I would borrow it rather than purchase it.
  • This book has a lot of super easy tutorials in it to teach you how to sew without requiring a ton of materials. This is the first book I purchased, and I taught myself the basics of sewing from it. Great option for the beginning sewer.
  • I have recently started sewing again, and I love fun projects that can be finished quickly. Unable to find certain items in the stores that suited my needs, tastes, or budget, I wanted to try making them myself. I am always looking for a good insulated lunch bag for my husband and a belt bag for my sister. I also wanted to make a pet bed and dog jacket. My husband recently asked me for a laptop sleeve. Mom wanted a garden apron. I have a hard time finding cute hats that fit. All of these projects and many more were in this one book!

I hoped this book might have a couple of ideas so that I could put my fabric stash to good use. Was I ever surprised and delighted! There's something for everyone. I've already earmarked five projects and started two of them. The instructions are (generally) easy enough for a beginner, although I was confused with some of the directions. I intend to make templates for future projects that do not have patterns. I love that there are actual patterns for many of the projects and that the book is spiral bound so that it lays flat. I wish there were more drawings and photos of the finished projects, but I still give it 5 stars.

Overall, I think this is a great book for beginners and those looking for really useful, quick, fun projects. It would make a great gift for a beginner sewer.

  • Granted, there are lots of ideas in here, but honestly most of them could be found for free online. The spiral bound format is nice and it comes with pattern pieces which is helpful. I'm a very visual learner and the instructions are all written, so that presented a small challenge to me, but nothing I couldn't handle. ) With this many projects I can understand photos of steps would be difficult to include.
  • Bought used, like new but the patterns were missing so returned this item. Otherwise this is a great book. I have the second one too.
